With so many unlimited data plans on offer—and various interpretations of what “unlimited” means, exactly—choosing between carriers isn’t easy.

So I’ve tried to do most of the work for you. This guide will help you sort through major carrier data plans and see how much you can get toward a new phone. I’ll also suggest some alternative providers that may be much cheaper than AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, provided you don’t mind bringing your own phone.
