New Inverse-POSSE setup

POSSE: Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Everywhere

The dream if you have a blog like this is to post in once place and have it automatically propagate out to various social/blogging platforms so people can see it wherever they are.

I don't think I'm quite there. But after way too much fiddling around with automations and connectors, I've got something that sort of works in reverse:

  1. Post to my Mastodon account.
  2. Skymoth re-posts it to my Bluesky account.
  3. A couple of Make.com automations re-post it to my Threads and LinkedIn accounts.
  4. Another Make.com automation re-posts it here on my Advisorator.com blog.

Instead of posting on my own site first, I'm using Mastodon as the source, mainly because I'm enjoying myself there so it's the easiest place to post from, way less heavy than starting from a WordPress post.

Skymoth was easy, but everything else wasn't. Threads, LinkedIn, and WordPress all require slightly different automation steps for text and image posts. Threads and LinkedIn require further distinction for multi-image posts. And on top of that you have to filter out things like replies and @ mentions. But I'm already using Make for other automations, and eventually it was able to handle all those cases.

Why not just set up a social media cross-poster like Buffer? I've tried it, but it's just not an enjoyable way to be on social media when you're posting for yourself, for fun. This setup provides similar benefits but feels more organic.

Notably this is just for little social media posts, which I thought it'd be fun to reflect back here on the blog. For longer posts like this, I'll publish here first, put a link out on Mastodon, and then let that link post propagate elsewhere. (And yes, I've set up a rule so that Mastodon post doesn't become a duplicate thing here.)

We'll see how it goes but it seems like a system that might actually work.
