A list of apps and tools to try while I'm gone
Hey folks, as I mentioned last Tuesday, I’m taking a week off to rest and recharge before the Fall Gadget Onslaught begins. |
But in the interest of still sending you something, I thought I’d share a random assortment of apps and tools that I’ve previously added to my bookmark pile. These are things I’ve been meaning to check out, but probably won’t be covering at length anytime soon, so I might as well just list them here and come back from vacation with a slightly tidier backlog. |
If you’re feeling adventurous, give them a shot and let me know how it goes: |
-
Breathwrk: Free app for breathing exercises on iOS and Android.
-
EarTrumpet: Free Windows utility for controlling each program’s volume independently.
-
Workona for iPad: A productivity-centric browser with tab grouping features.
-
Maestral: An alternative Dropbox sync client for Mac. Use it to bypass Dropbox’s device sync limits.
-
Andi: Alternative search engine with a chat-like interface and no tracking.
-
Local: Chrome extension that tells you if an Amazon product is available at stores nearby. (Also for Firefox.)
-
Ochi: Blocks distracting apps and websites on Mac and iOS.
-
Ground Zero: $1 Mac app that resets apps to their original installed state.
-
Tayasui Sketches: Pleasant little sketchbook app for iOS.
-
Stardock Groupy: $10 Windows app that groups multiple apps into tabs.
-
Be my eyes: Volunteer to give visual assistance to low-vision folks over the internet.
-
Museum of Endangered Sounds: Just a fun website for listening to old tech sounds.

Did you know that in addition to the weekly newsletter, I’ve been publishing a collection of free-standing guides on the Advisorator members-only website? Read the most recent addition—a list of my most essential apps—or check out the full list. |
And if you’ve fallen behind on the newsletter proper, here are a handful of my favorites from the past few months: |
I hope you’ve enjoyed this admittedly unusual issue of Advisorator. We’ll be back to the regular format next Tuesday, August 23. Stay cool until then! |
