Advisorator Free: Easy iCloud photo transfers

A note from Jared
Hey folks. just a heads up that I’ll be making some changes to the free version of Advisorator in the weeks ahead. While I’ve enjoyed experimenting with expanded news and links sections over the past couple months, ultimately I don’t think they do a great job of conveying what the newsletter is all about.
Right now, my plan is to bring the focus back to tips and deals, rather than news and links. I may also send some full issues of the newsletter on occasion, and may play around with timing as well. My goal is to provide a clearer sense of what’s available to paid subscribers while still delivering a newsletter that’s useful on its own.
To that end, I’ve also just put together a handful of feature topics from past issues of the paid newsletter, representing some of my favorite tech tips from over the years. I’ll be sending these out automatically to new subscribers starting today, but you can check them out here:
One more thing: You might notice that this newsletter has gotten a bit of a redesign. I hope you enjoy it! And if you have any questions or feedback, please let me know.
Thanks again,
Jared
Easy iCloud photo transfers

Apple has added a simple way to transfer your iCloud photos and videos to Google Photos. Head to privacy.apple.com, sign into your account, and select “Request to transfer a copy of your data.” This brings up a transfer menu where you can select Google Photos as the destination and connect your Google account. Apple says the transfers will take three to seven days.
Of course, this service would be much more appealing if it didn’t count against your Google account storage limits, and if Google wasn’t discontinuing unlimited uploads for new photos in June. But if you’re more inclined to pay Google for cloud storage than Apple—perhaps because you’re running out of Gmail space, or make extensive use of Google Drive—at least you’ve got a simple transfer option. (Sadly, Google provides no simple way to send photos in the other direction if the opposite is true, as Google Takeout remains the only export option.)
Deal of the moment

This morning brings iPad deals galore, including sales on the basic iPad ($299 for 32 GB, $395 for 128 GB), the 11-inch iPad Pro ($680 for 256 GB), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro ($999 for 256 GB). For those Pro models, you can also save $100 on Apple’s Magic Keyboard, in both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. Just keep in mind that Apple is reportedly planning to announce new iPad Pro models soon.
