Turn audio into text

While OpenAI’s ChatGPT is getting all the attention, the company has also released a speech-to-text model called Whisper for transcribing speech to text. You can use it for meetings, interviews, lectures, podcasts, or anything else where you have an audio file of the recording.

The best way to access Whisper is via a free Windows and Mac app called Buzz. Once you’ve installed the app, just hit the “+” button to choose your audio file, then hit “Run.” After a few minutes, you’ll get a transcription that you can copy and paste into any text editor. (The app also lets you choose from larger text-to-speech models, which are more accurate but take longer and require more computing power.)

Mac users can also check out an alternative called MacWhisper. It has a nicer interface and lets you search through transcripts directly in the app, but there’s no way to copy or export while preserving line breaks and timestamps. It’s available at pay-what-you-want pricing, including a $0 option.
