The last year has been a weird one in the consumer electronics world, and not just for the obvious COVID-19-related reasons.

The product categories that were once the most exciting—phones, tablets, smart watches, smart speakers—have settled into maturity, yet new areas such as foldable screens and virtual/augmented reality glasses are still stuck in their infancy. Though pandemic-influenced chip shortages haven’t helped, tech companies seemed to be at a loss for what comes next.
