Vacation Link Dump (12/2024)

Vacation Link Dump
Hey there! I’m Jared Newman, a longtime tech journalist, and this is Advisorator, my weekly tech advice newsletter. Did someone share this newsletter with you? Sign up to get it every Tuesday.
It’s the tail end of 2024, which means it’s time to turn in what I freely acknowledge is my lowest-effort column of the year.
I call it the Vacation Link Dump, and it consists of various apps and tools that seemed interesting enough to bookmark but never wound up making it into the newsletter.
In most cases I haven’t even tried these apps myself, so I make no guarantees of their quality. But if you’re feeling adventurous and have some spare time, give them a shot and let me know how it turns out:
- Hike Maker: Define a desired walking/jogging/running distance and this will create a route. There are other tools like it but this one seems nice.
- Wayther: iPhone app that shows weather conditions along your entire driving route.
- Morecast Plan Your Route: Similar to the above, but works in any web browser.
- Mealtrain: Help a group of people organize meals for someone in need of them.
- Depth of Field Simulator: For understanding all those terms that camera nerds know so much about.
- FreeFileSync: Geeky tool for backing up data to external drives (or Google Drive.)
- JSON Notes: A lightweight web app that saves notes locally in your browser.
- Clean Me: Mac app that sorts all the files on your desktop into folders.
- Horse Browser: A productivity-centric Mac browser that costs $60 once instead of monetizing in more annoying ways.
- Quick Capture: An app for quickly saving notes to Obsidian.
- Pink Arrows: Paste your screenshots here and annotate them with drawings or text.
- Hi Hello: Digital business cards that you can share with a QR code.
- Wallaroo: Curated digital wallpapers that you pay for with a subscription.
- Super Productivity: Tasks, time tracking, and time blocking in one place.
- Sunlitt: Virtual views of a location’s sun and shade coverage at different times of day.
- Flow: Another take on the minimalist Android home screen launcher.
- Plinky: A pleasant app for saving bookmarks on iOS devices.
- In Your Face: Mac app that takes up the whole screen with calendar reminders so you don’t miss them.
Do you enjoy these recommendations and want more of them? I’ve covered hundreds of great apps over the years, and have compiled them into a big list for Advisorator’s paid subscribers.
Happy New Year!
With that, another year of newsletters comes to a close. Please note that I’ve been mostly taking a break from email over the past week and will start digging through my inbox in a few days. If you’ve emailed me recently and haven’t received a response, I appreciate your patience!
Have a happy new year, and thanks so much for reading (and perhaps supporting) my work.
Until 2025,
Jared
