Let’s say hypothetically that you wanted to automate an entire room’s worth of lighting, either through your phone or with voice control.

One option would be to replace all the standard bulbs with smart ones. This would be a fairly straightforward upgrade, but it would also limit the use of your actual light switches, as the smart bulbs would be non-functional whenever the physical switch was turned off. It’s also a non-starter for specialized bulbs that don’t have a smart equivalent.
