Mark texts as unread

Welcome to Advisorator’s Tip of the Week, helping you learn something new from the tech world every Tuesday.
Whenever Apple releases a major iOS update, some of the best new features tend to fly under the radar.
Case in point is the new ability to mark text messages as unread in iOS 16. From the conversation list, swipe right on any message, then tap the blue chat bubble icon, or just keep swiping until you feel a little tactile bump. This will restore a blue unread dot to the thread and bring a red notification badge back to the home screen, effectively reminding you to deal with the message later.
For conversations you’ve pinned to the top of the Messages app, use the alternative method: Long-press the message, then select “Mark as Unread” in the pop-up window. Both approaches also work in reverse, so you can mark messages as read straight from the conversation list.
What about Android? Unfortunately, neither Google’s nor Samsung’s default text messaging apps support marking texts as unread. But if you don’t mind using a third-party text messaging app, you’ll find this capability in Pulse SMS.
