Every so often, we hear that passwords are finally going to disappear.

The idea seems compelling on the surface: Instead of relying on letters, numbers, and special characters, we’ll use fingerprints, face recognition, or a physical security key to access our accounts. Proving who we are online will become effortless, and we’ll never again have to deal with password managers or our own unreliable brains.
