It doesn&#8217;t all have to be new, but all of it is new to me in some way. Looking back on previous editions\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2020\/11\/02\/12-24-2019-jareds-favorite-tech-things-of-2019\/\">2019<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2020\/12\/22\/12-22-2020-jareds-favorite-tech-things-of-2020\/\">2020<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2021\/12\/21\/12-21-2021-the-best-tech-i-used-this-year\/\">2021<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2022\/12\/20\/12-20-2022-my-favorite-tech-things\/\">2022<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2023\/12\/19\/12-19-2023-my-favorite-tech-things\/\">2023<\/a>\u2014it&#8217;s remarkable how many of these things I still rely on. Here&#8217;s what I picked up to replace them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Samsung&#8217;s 65-inch S90C OLED TV:<\/strong> This is last year&#8217;s model, but it still has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtings.com\/tv\/learn\/qd-oled-vs-woled\">QD-OLED panel<\/a> that combines eye-searingly bright highlights with the deepest black levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Samsung HW-Q990C 11.1.4-channel surround system:<\/strong> Also a year-old refurb, it has upward-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos in both the soundbar and rear speakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are connected to the desktop tower PC that <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2023\/03\/14\/3-14-2023-the-incredible-300-pc\/\">once lived in my office<\/a>, whose eight-year-old graphics card I also replaced with a gently-used AMD Radeon RX 7600 from eBay. I use a free Windows app called <a href=\"https:\/\/playnite.link\">Playnite<\/a> to unify all my PC games across Steam, Epic, GOG, and other sources, and I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/1666826\/tune-your-gaming-pc-for-the-living-room-10-tips-and-tweaks.html\">followed my own instructions<\/a> to make the whole setup work with just a game controller (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0D736BCNM?th=1\">8Bitdo&#8217;s Ultimate 2C<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to get all spiritual or anything, but I may have entered a different plane of existence at one point as the lights and sounds of <em>Shadow Warrior 2<\/em> melted my senses. All of which is to say that I&#8217;m extremely pleased with how everything&#8217;s set up now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(In case you didn&#8217;t spot the pattern, I leaned heavily on <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/advisorator-guides\/save-money-with-used-tech\/\">refurbished, open-box, and lightly-used electronics<\/a> to make these upgrades more affordable.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USB-frickin&#8217;-C<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>My other big hardware upgrade is one that mostly happened on its own: All my essential gadgets now use a standard USB-C cable for charging, which means I only need to bring one kind of cable wherever I go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iPhone was the big missing piece, as my old iPhone 13 Pro Max used Apple&#8217;s proprietary Lightning connector instead of USB-C. (Other variants take after Nintendo&#8217;s Japanese Famicom system, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.8bitdo.com\/retro-mechanical-keyboard-c64\/\">Commodore 64<\/a>, IBM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.8bitdo.com\/retro-mechanical-keyboard-m\/\">classic Model-M keyboard<\/a>, and\u2014most recently\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.8bitdo.com\/retro-87-mechanical-keyboard-xbox\/\">original Xbox<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I didn&#8217;t expect was <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2024\/06\/19\/6-19-2024-this-keyboard-has-everything\/\">how much I&#8217;d love the keyboard itself<\/a>. The programmable B\/A buttons to the right of the space bar have become indispensable, as I&#8217;ve mapped them to take screenshots and extract text from images. (The keyboard also ships with two giant B\/A buttons on a separate panel, which I&#8217;ve mapped to my calculator app and a little pop-up notepad.) Factor in the clicky mechanical keys, convenient volume knob and three connectivity modes\u2014wired USB-C, wireless USB-A dongle, and Bluetooth\u2014and it&#8217;s easily become my favorite keyboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vivaldi<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-1024x702.jpg\" alt=\"A web browser with two tabs open side-by-side in a single window.\" class=\"wp-image-7284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-1024x702.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-1536x1053.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-100x69.jpg 100w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-200x137.jpg 200w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-450x309.jpg 450w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-600x411.jpg 600w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen-900x617.jpg 900w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/vivaldisplitscreen.jpg 1670w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After bouncing between a few different web browsers over the years, I have at last returned to <a href=\"https:\/\/vivaldi.com\">Vivaldi<\/a>, for which I&#8217;ve had a soft spot since its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3054029\/this-new-web-browser-made-me-give-up-google-chrome\">initial beta launch nine years ago<\/a>. I drifted away due to some pesky bugs and the lack of a mobile version, but those aren&#8217;t issues anymore. Meanwhile, I enjoy Vivaldi&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/advisorator-guides\/how-i-use-vivaldi-for-better-web-browsing\/\">deep customizations and power user features<\/a>, such as split-screen tabs, slide-out &#8220;Web Panels,&#8221; and &#8220;Workspaces&#8221; for organizing different types of tabs. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/vivaldi.com\/we-respect-your-privacy\/\">lack of intrusive data collection<\/a> is just icing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Various app subscriptions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been pretty stingy about signing up for subscription services\u2014especially <a href=\"https:\/\/cordcutterweekly.com\/\">on the streaming side<\/a>\u2014but this year I relaxed my stance a bit while trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2024\/05\/07\/5-5-2024-ive-become-a-tech-hippie\/\">support more sustainable tech products<\/a> over those from growth-at-all-costs tech giants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Obsidian Sync:<\/strong> My <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2023\/08\/22\/8-22-2023-my-nerdy-new-notes-setup\/\">favorite notetaking app<\/a> quietly lowered the price of its <a href=\"https:\/\/obsidian.md\/sync\">sync service<\/a> this year, down to $5 per month (or $48 per year) to easily access your notes across all devices. I previously synced my notes via OneDrive, but have grown tired of running into file conflicts and jumping through hoops to access my notes on the iPhone, where syncing a full OneDrive folder isn\u2019t possible. Obsidian Sync is seamless, and Obsidian itself is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90960653\/why-people-are-obsessed-with-obsidian-the-indie-darling-of-notetaking-apps\">a deeply likeable product<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bitwarden Premium<\/strong>: Bitwarden&#8217;s core password manager is free, but the paid version is only $10 <em>per year<\/em> and has made <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2024\/03\/26\/3-26-2024-is-bitwarden-worth-paying-for\/\">dealing with two-factor authentication vastly easier<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feedbin<\/strong>: I&#8217;m back to <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2024\/10\/15\/advisorator-your-new-old-internet-homepage\/\">using an RSS reader<\/a> to keep up with my favorite websites and blogs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/feedbin.com\">Feedbin<\/a> is just so pleasant to use. I decided $5 per month was worth avoiding the interface gunk of free alternatives such as Feedly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kagi<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/kagi.com\/\">This one&#8217;s a bit of a splurge<\/a> at $10 per month for unlimited use, but it&#8217;s the only privacy-centric search engine I&#8217;ve used whose results seem better than Google&#8217;s (in part because <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/07\/non-google-search-engines-blocked-from-showing-recent-reddit-results\/\">some of its results come from Google<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blogs and Blogging<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The other notable tech thing I did in 2024 was start a <a href=\"https:\/\/jarednewman.com\/blog\/\">personal blog<\/a>. It includes links to my published work elsewhere, but also the occasional stray idea that doesn&#8217;t quite fit the molds of Advisorator or Cord Cutter Weekly. (For instance, I <a href=\"https:\/\/jarednewman.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/11\/sure-what-the-heck-lets-try-reviewing-the-yacht-rock-documentary\/\">tried doing a movie review<\/a>.) It&#8217;s been nice having a spot on the web to write purely for fun with no expectations as time permits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m also trying to keep up with more personal-ish blogs, using the aforementioned Feedbin RSS reader (and I linked to a bunch of neat ones in <a href=\"https:\/\/jarednewman.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/03\/for-the-love-of-god-visit-someones-website\/\">this blog post<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So much of what I&#8217;ve always thought of as the web seems to be eroding. Major social media sites discourage posts that link elsewhere so you don&#8217;t leave their confines, and generative AI products discourage you from seeking answers that it can&#8217;t spit out on its own (however inaccurately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my own little way, I&#8217;m trying to preserve the fabric that made me so excited about the internet in the first place, not just on a personal blog, but in newsletters like this one.
