Assuming you&#8217;ve got a safe spot to prop up your phone, use these methods to trigger the shutter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use a timer:<\/strong> Pretty much every phone has a shutter timer function, usually indicated by a timer icon. (To find it on the iPhone, for instance, tap the up arrow near the top of the screen, then scroll right on the bottom control pane.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use your smartwatch:<\/strong> Start the timer from your watch using the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/watch\/camera-remote-apda6e61c287\/watchos\">Camera Remote app<\/a> on an Apple Watch or the Camera app on Wear OS watches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use your voice:<\/strong> On Android phones, say &#8220;Hey Google, take a photo,&#8221; or &#8220;Hey Google, take a selfie.&#8221; On Samsung phones, you can also say &#8220;Cheese,&#8221; &#8220;Capture,&#8221; &#8220;Smile,&#8221; or &#8220;Shoot&#8221; while the camera is open. (You may need to enable this first by tapping the gear icon and heading to Shooting Methods &gt; Voice Commands.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use your palm:<\/strong> On Pixel phones, hold your palm up to the camera to start the shutter timer. (By default, this only works when timer mode is enabled. You can set it to work at all times tapping the gear icon and changing the &#8220;Palm Timer&#8221; setting.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using the iOS 18 beta?<\/strong> You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91149263\/ios-18-vocal-actions-siri\">use Vocal Actions<\/a> to set up a voice-activated camera trigger. Just assign a phrase like &#8220;Say Cheese&#8221; to the volume up button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">How I solved my clipboard history headaches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a scenario I run into often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I copy a link, image, or snippet of text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I copy another link, image, or snippet of text, overwriting the previous clipboard item.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I now realize that I need to paste the original item, so I waste a bunch of time finding and copying it all over again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On my Windows PCs, this is never a problem. Using Microsoft&#8217;s built-in clipboard history tool, you can easily retrieve a list of previously-copied items by pressing <strong>Win+V<\/strong>, then select the one you want to paste. This feature has saved my bacon on numerous occasions\u2014especially when I&#8217;ve already closed or deleted the item in question\u2014yet for reasons I can&#8217;t fathom, it&#8217;s not a standard feature on every operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2024\/08\/13\/8-13-2024-solving-clipboard-history-headaches\/\"><strong>Paid subscribers can read the full column here<\/strong><\/a>. Not subscribed yet? <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/subscribe-to-advisorator\/\">Try it for free<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">News in brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t pay for people search removal:<\/strong> I love <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2024\/08\/its-not-worth-paying-to-be-removed-from-people-finder-sites-study-says\/\">this new study from Consumer Reports<\/a> on wiping your phone number, address, and other personal data from people search sites such as ClustrMaps and PeopleFinders. While some companies such as Optery and DeleteMe charge upwards of $100 per year to take data down on your behalf, they&#8217;re apparently less effective than just manually requesting the takedowns yourself. (<a href=\"https:\/\/easyoptouts.com\">EasyOptOuts<\/a>, by far the least expensive option at $20 per year, was the most effective in Consumer Reports&#8217; testing, but still couldn&#8217;t match the manual route.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get your data removed from people search sites and aren&#8217;t sure where to start, I <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2023\/08\/15\/8-16-2023-hide-yourself-from-google-search\/\">wrote a newsletter on that topic for paid subscribers last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Google&#8217;s smart speaker plans:<\/strong> Google says it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/08\/06\/google-assistant-nest-displays-speakers\/\">sticking with Google Assistant<\/a> as its voice agent on smart speakers for now, even as it pushes Gemini as its answer to ChatGPT on phones. Starting next year, you might see some Gemini-powered features\u2014for instance, you&#8217;ll be able to ask for help creating smart home routines, or get more conversational answers to certain questions\u2014but no drastic overhaul is forthcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a relief, as my experience with Gemini on Android is that it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91130658\/google-pixel-8a-review\">considerably worse than Assistant at getting things done<\/a>. Meanwhile, Amazon&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/21\/24183013\/amazon-alexa-ai-subscription\">pushing ahead with a generative AI version of Alexa<\/a>, for which it reportedly hopes you&#8217;ll pay up to $10 per month. Good luck with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other news tidbits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/chrome\/google-chrome-ai-features-august-2024-update\/\">adding more AI features to Chrome<\/a>, including natural language history search and a way to compare products from different browser tabs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/2418837\/nest-learning-thermostat-4th-gen-can-it-take-back-the-crown.html\">latest Nest thermostat<\/a> has a new design, better motion detection, and energy-saving suggestions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An actually-neat use for generative AI: Nest cameras will get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/home\/smart-home\/google-is-using-ai-to-make-its-nest-security-cameras-a-lot-smarter-heres-how\">written event summaries this fall<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Photos <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/photos\/thread\/289829291?hl=en\">renames the Library tab<\/a> to &#8220;Collections,&#8221; with easier access to faces and shared albums.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People hate the new Sonos app so much that the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/7\/24215589\/sonos-q3-2024-earnings-ace-headphone-buggy-app\">delaying new products to fix it<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weird ads for AI-generated books are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/tablets\/amazon-is-still-delivering-weird-ai-book-ads-to-kindles-and-i-wonder-if-anyone-can-control-this\">showing up on Kindle lock screens<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/you-can-now-include-20-images-in-a-single-instagram-post-211516632.html?src=rss\">doubles the limit on photos per post<\/a>, from 10 to 20.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The popular flight tracking app Flighty can now <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/08\/06\/flighty-predict-delays-update-release\/\">predict delays before your airline does<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rumor: The next Mac Mini desktop <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/08\/08\/apple-preparing-major-mac-mini-redesign-for-later-this-year-report-says\/\">might be a lot smaller<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Samsung&#8217;s popular Frame TVs are finally getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/7\/24215184\/tcl-nxtframe-samsung-frame-tv-knockoff-price-announcement\">cheaper competition from the likes of TCL<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Fast Company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91167564\/mozilla-wants-you-to-love-firefox-again\">I wrote about Mozilla&#8217;s efforts to revitalize Firefox<\/a>\u2014and how it&#8217;s upsetting some loyal users along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Try this app<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apple Pencil camera trigger:<\/strong> What got me thinking about this week&#8217;s tip is a new iPad app called <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/pencilera\/id6550425272\">Pencilera<\/a>, which lets you trigger the camera on an iPad with either a double-tap on the Apple Pencil 2 or a squeeze on the Apple Pencil Pro.
