While connected, head to Settings &gt; AirPods (just below your user name), then look for these notable options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pick a name:<\/strong> Especially if you\u2019re in a home with multiple AirPods floating around, rename yours to something more recognizable than just \u201cAirPods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Map your stems:<\/strong> From the AirPods settings menu, use the \u201cPress and hold AirPods\u201d section to change what your AirPods Pro do when squeezing the stems. You can map a stem to Siri or choose which noise cancellation modes to cycle through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 1st- and 2nd-gen AirPods, you\u2019ll see \u201cDouble-Tap on AirPod\u201d options instead. Mapping a double-tap to Play\/Pause to either earbud will disable single-tap control entirely\u2014useful if you tend to trigger it by accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check your fit:<\/strong> If you\u2019re not sure which ear tips to use with the AirPods Pro, scroll to the bottom of the AirPods Settings menu and select \u201cEar Tip Fit Test.\u201d You\u2019ll hear a short audio sample, which will determine whether your selected tips are forming a good seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disable Conversational Awareness:<\/strong> This ballyhooed second-gen AirPods Pro feature automatically switches to Transparency mode after you start talking. It\u2019s laggy, doesn\u2019t turn on when someone\u2019s talking to you, and often kicks in when I\u2019m mowing the lawn for some reason, so I just turned it off entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disable auto-connect:<\/strong> One of my biggest pet peeves with AirPods is how they automatically switch between devices. This often stops the audio on my iPhone, and instead treats me to the sound of whatever Netflix show my kids are watching on my iPad. You can disable this from the AirPods settings menu by tapping \u201cConnect to this iPhone\/iPad,\u201d then selecting \u201cWhen Last Connected.\u201d You can always manually connect to your AirPods in Control Center by hitting the AirPlay icon, then selecting your AirPods from the device list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For more ways to make the most of your AirPods, check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/the-ultimate-airpods-guide\/\"><strong>ultimate AirPods guide<\/strong><\/a>, part of a newly-expanded <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/advisorator-guides\/\">collection of resources for paid subscribers<\/a>. Start a <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/subscribe-to-advisorator\/\">free trial membership<\/a> to read it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">News in brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spotify price drop:<\/strong> After raising streaming music prices by $1 per month a few weeks ago, Spotify has <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2024-06-21\/more-choice-for-us-subscribers\/\">added another plan at the old $11 per month price<\/a>, albeit without 15 hours of monthly audiobook listening. There&#8217;s also an audiobook-free family plan at $17 per month instead of $20 per month. As <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2024\/06\/21\/spotify-basic-plans-audiobooks\/\">9to5Google notes<\/a>, you can&#8217;t get these plans as a new subscriber. The only way to find them is to downgrade from an existing subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proton photo backups:<\/strong> Proton Drive is becoming a more viable Google Photos alternative with automatic photo and video backups, which <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/06\/20\/proton-brings-photo-and-video-backups-to-ios\/\">arrived on iOS last week<\/a> and on Android in December. Proton says albums and automatic categorization are also in the works, but didn&#8217;t give a timeline. I love the idea of jumping in with a more privacy-centric Google Photos competitor like this\u2014and I&#8217;m already paying for Proton Mail\u2014but would need face recognition and automatic partner sharing to consider a switch in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More catch-up:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AT&amp;T <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/at-t-is-raising-prices-on-its-older-unlimited-plans-starting-with-your-august-bill\/\">raises prices on several older plans<\/a>, by $10 per month for individuals or $20 per month for families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reuters reports that Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/amazon-mulls-5-10-monthly-price-tag-unprofitable-alexa-service-ai-revamp-2024-06-21\/\">may charge $5 to $10 per month<\/a> for a generative AI version of Alexa, but some rumored features <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.exchange\/@Newmy\/112655031202753839\">already exist in the current version<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apple&#8217;s forthcoming AI features will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theshortcut.com\/p\/apple-intelligence-compatibility-list\">require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer<\/a>. (Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2024\/06\/11\/what-is-apple-intelligence-heres-how-ai-will-change-the-way-you-use-your-iphone\/\">rundown of what those features are<\/a>.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The U.S. government is <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2024\/06\/citing-national-security-us-will-ban-kaspersky-anti-virus-software-in-july\/\">banning sales of Kaspersky antivirus<\/a> next month, citing security concerns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neat gadget idea: An Android tablet that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/liliputing.com\/with-eight-speakers-the-lenovo-tab-plus-is-basically-a-portable-audio-device-thats-also-an-11-5-inch-android-tablet\/\">also a Bluetooth speaker<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;m in the New York Times!
