As the singular shopping holiday has given way to an entire week\u2014or, I&#8217;m guessing, multiple weeks\u2014of deals, we now have more time to deliberate and strategize. And in the case of this newsletter, I have time to post a guide that will remain viable for more than just a frantic 24-hour period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of which is to say that I have just published <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/the-advisorator-guide-to-black-friday\/\">a comprehensive Black Friday guide on the Advisorator website<\/a>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highlighted deals that I think are especially noteworthy, with explanations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A longer list of notable deals broken down by category.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidance on how to vet deals yourself and avoid wasting money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, I <strong>never collect an affiliate fee or sales commission<\/strong> from any of the deals in this newsletter. RCS is a successor to standard text messaging (known as SMS and MMS), allowing for high-resolution images and video, typing status indicators, read receipts, and larger group chats. In other words, it eliminates most of the annoyances that arise when iPhone and Android users chat with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will not, however, eliminate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-apples-imessage-is-winning-teens-dread-the-green-text-bubble-11641618009\">weird social stigmas around chatting with green bubbles<\/a>, at least in the United States. Apple has already indicated that it will stick with green for RCS chats, and it&#8217;s also not going to support the end-to-end encryption that Google has added to its own Messages app for Android. Instead, Apple will push for encryption in the RCS standard itself. (Arguably it should have been <a href=\"https:\/\/daringfireball.net\/linked\/2023\/11\/16\/apple-rcs\">included from the start<\/a>.) Expect Apple to continue marketing iMessage as an exclusive experience for iPhone users, even as its benefits diminish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the meantime<\/strong>, lots of companies have been trying to bring iMessage to Android with varying degrees of success. One example is Sunbird, which uses a network of virtual Macs to relay users&#8217; messages onto Android phones. Sunbird launched in a closed alpha last year, but last week released a rebranded version of its app in conjunction with Nothing, an Android phone maker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, researchers quickly discovered that <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/11\/nothings-imessage-app-was-a-security-catastrophe-taken-down-in-24-hours\/\">Sunbird&#8217;s app was full of security holes<\/a>, and was passing users&#8217; message data through an unsecure online database despite the company&#8217;s claims that it preserved end-to-end encryption. Nothing quickly pulled the app &#8220;to fix several bugs,&#8221; while Sunbird itself has largely remained silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunbird isn&#8217;t alone in using the virtual Mac approach to bring iMessage to Android. I&#8217;ve been using another app called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeper.com\/\">Beeper<\/a>, which has been a mostly positive experience. (I&#8217;ll discuss it more in a future newsletter.) While this approach is inherently less secure than using iMessage on an iPhone\u2014something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeper.com\/faq#how-does-beeper-connect-to-encrypted-chat-networks-like-imessage-signal-whatsapp\">Beeper itself even acknowledges<\/a>\u2014it sounds like Sunbird&#8217;s practices were especially shoddy, and Nothing should&#8217;ve done more due diligence before throwing weight behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Tip of the moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"825\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-1024x825.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-1024x825.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-768x619.jpg 768w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-100x81.jpg 100w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-150x121.jpg 150w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-200x161.jpg 200w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-450x363.jpg 450w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-600x484.jpg 600w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa-900x725.jpg 900w, https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/keepa.jpg 1474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Smarter smartphone shopping:<\/strong> While I often mention <a href=\"https:\/\/camelcamelcamel.com\/\">CamelCamelCamel<\/a> as a way to check the price history of items on Amazon, it&#8217;s not so easy on your phone, where you can&#8217;t install CamelCamelCamel&#8217;s excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/camelcamelcamel.com\/camelizer\">browser extension<\/a> for one-click price checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s where <a href=\"https:\/\/keepa.com\/\">Keepa<\/a> comes in. Functionally it&#8217;s similar to CamelCamelCamel, except it also has proper <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/keepa-price-tracker\/id1518541385\">iPhone<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.keepa.mobile\">Android<\/a> apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed, tap the Share button while viewing any product on Amazon&#8217;s app or website, then look for the Keepa icon. Tapping it will bring up that product&#8217;s price history so you can tell if it&#8217;s a good deal.
