The other is <a href=\"https:\/\/skiff.com\/mail\">Skiff Mail<\/a>, which has only been around for a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Gmail has mostly served me well, I&#8217;ve been seeking an off-ramp for a bunch of reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My inbox is becoming overrun by bad PR pitches, marketing emails, and other assorted junk despite my best efforts to tame it all.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While Gmail&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/mail\/answer\/3094499?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop\">Categories<\/a> filter helps tame some of the above, it&#8217;s also unpredictable, and I&#8217;m tired of being at the whims of Google&#8217;s sorting algorithms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Photos continues to eat into my cloud storage space, and I&#8217;d rather not have my ability to receive email held ransom by my photo collection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I&#8217;d like to become less dependent on Google overall and wrestle back some control over my online identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this has made a fresh start seem pretty appealing, Skiff&#8217;s recent launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90915415\/skiff-free-custom-domain-support\">free custom domain support<\/a> provided the perfect opportunity try an alternative. This includes unlimited talk, text, and data, but with a catch: Your connection gets deprioritized if Verizon&#8217;s network is busy. (Hotspot use is also limited to 5 Mbps and one connected device at a time.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visible&#8217;s premium tier s till costs $45 per month, with at least 50 GB of prioritized data per month (or unlimited, on <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2022\/01\/25\/1-25-2022-hype-free-5g\/\">Verizon&#8217;s faster 5G bands<\/a>), but an August promo code (<strong>VISIBLE35<\/strong>) knocks the price to $35 per month instead. It also includes a $10 per month discount on Verizon&#8217;s home internet service. Michael Timmerman <a href=\"https:\/\/michaelsaves.com\/cell-phones\/visible-review\/\">has a great overview<\/a> of the service, and you can check my <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/how-to-pick-a-data-plan\/\">data plan comparison to chart<\/a> to see how the major carriers stack up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Raspberry Pi supply:<\/strong> Since the pandemic, Raspberry Pi microcomputers have been nearly impossible to get at normal prices. That&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2023\/08\/some-shops-will-let-you-buy-more-than-one-raspberry-pi-at-a-time-again\/\">finally starting to change<\/a>, as the company works through supply shortages for commercial customers and gets back to stocking up retail stores. Most stores <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/products\/raspberry-pi-4-model-b\/?variant=raspberry-pi-4-model-b-2gb\">on the Raspberry Pi website<\/a> still show no inventory, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canakit.com\/raspberry-pi-4-2gb.html?cid=usd&amp;src=raspberrypi\">Canakit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralcomputer.com\/raspberry-pi-4-model-b-rpi4-modbp-4gb-4gb-ddr4-ram-bcm2711-soc-usb-3-0-poe-enabled.html\">Central Computer<\/a> claim to have units in stock, at $45 with 2 GB of RAM and $55 with 4 GB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pi is a little computer that you can program in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/420028\/10-practical-raspberry-pi-projects-anyone-can-do.html\">all kinds of ways<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techhive.com\/article\/578408\/how-to-build-a-cheap-cord-cutting-dvr-using-raspberry-pi.html\">running a media server<\/a>, blocking ads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smarthomebeginner.com\/pi-hole-raspberry-pi-setup-guide-2023\/\">across your entire Wi-Fi network<\/a>, or creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/how-to-install-and-setup-home-assistant-on-raspberry-pi-for-home-automation\/\">DIY smart home setup<\/a>. You can also just use it as a cheap desktop running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90585333\/raspberry-pi-400-keyboard-pc-review-laptop\">Linux<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2020\/12\/08\/12-8-2010-a-weekend-raspberry-pi-project\/\">Android<\/a>. If you&#8217;re up for a fun tech project, now might be the time to seek a Pi out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Google Assistant&#8217;s shake-up:<\/strong> Google is reportedly rebooting its virtual assistant around generative AI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/07\/31\/google-assistant-artificial-intelligence-news\">Axios reports<\/a> based on an internal company email. Much like ChatGPT (and Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bard.google.com\/\">own Bard<\/a>), this would make Assistant better at interpreting natural language queries and offering human-like answers (albeit occasionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/03\/21\/google-bard\/\">wrong ones<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear when this switch might happen, but I bring it up now because the core Assistant experience seems to be falling apart. My pal JR Raphael has documented examples in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3703729\/whats-going-on-with-google-assistant.html\">a recent Computerworld column<\/a>, but I&#8217;ve had my own pent-up frustrations that sent me <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2022\/10\/18\/10-18-2022-giving-up-on-google-assistant\/\">running to Alexa<\/a> last year. Given Google&#8217;s history of <a href=\"https:\/\/killedbygoogle.com\">leaving products for dead<\/a>, I&#8217;d be wary of investing deeply into Nest smart displays or speakers right now. (Also: Virtual assistants are already money losers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/03\/13\/chatgpt-and-generative-ai-are-booming-but-at-a-very-expensive-price.html\">generative AI is expensive<\/a>. It&#8217;s a distraction and a waste of data, and you can&#8217;t always stop it with <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2022\/04\/19\/4-19-2022-tracker-blocking-options\/\">ad blockers and anti-tracking tools<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, here are some ways to prevent videos from playing until you actually click on them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chrome:<\/strong> Google&#8217;s browser has no built-in way to disable autoplay, but you can install the <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/autoplaystopper\/ejddcgojdblidajhngkogefpkknnebdh\/\">AutoplayStopper<\/a> extension as a workaround.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safari:<\/strong> Head to Safari &gt; Settings, then click the Websites tab. Choose Auto-Play from the left sidebar, then use the &#8220;Settings for all websites&#8221; dropdown menu to select &#8220;Never Auto-Play.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edge:<\/strong> Open <strong>edge:\/\/settings\/content\/mediaAutoplay<\/strong> in your address bar, then switch the dropdown menu from &#8220;Limit&#8221; to &#8220;Block.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Firefox:<\/strong> From the settings menu, head to Privacy &amp; Security, scroll down to the Permissions section, and click &#8220;Autoplay.&#8221; Under &#8220;Default for all websites,&#8221; select &#8220;Block Audio &amp; Video.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brave:<\/strong> Open <strong>brave:\/\/settings\/content\/autoplay<\/strong> in your address bar, and choose &#8220;Block sites from autoplaying videos.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the above fixes only work on desktop websites. Blocking autoplay in mobile browsers is more complicated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>iOS:<\/strong> For a one-time price of $10, a Safari extension called <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/app\/stopthemadness-mobile\/id1583082931?mt=8\">StopTheMadness<\/a> can turn off autoplay and various other web annoyances.
