The free newsletter continues below.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">News in brief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Apple gear<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past week&#8217;s biggest tech news came from Apple, which announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone-18-pro\/\">iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max<\/a>, the foldable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone-duo\/\">iPhone Duo<\/a>, the Apple Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-watch-series-12\/\">Series 12<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-watch-ultra-4\/\">Ultra 4<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/airpods-5\/\">AirPods 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a foldable phone fan, I&#8217;m most intrigued by the Duo. While it&#8217;s not wildly different from Android-based foldables (particularly Samsung&#8217;s passport-shaped Fold8), Apple has tried to shave away some of those phones&#8217; compromises. The crease is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/mobile\/iphone-duo-screen-crease-fold-impressions\/\">barely visible<\/a>, it works with MagSafe accessories, and it&#8217;s waterproof. You can also use it with an Apple Pencil (which is pretty much the only reason I still have an iPad Mini) and I&#8217;ll wager that app makers will do a better job supporting the new format than they do on the Android side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91594185\/samsung-fold8-perfect-foldable-phone-will-never-exist\">every foldable phone has trade-offs<\/a>, including the iPhone Duo: It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2026\/09\/09\/iphone-duo-thicker-and-heavier-than-basically-every-android-foldable\/\">thicker and heavier<\/a> than every competing Android foldable, and the camera system is <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2026\/09\/10\/the-beautiful-iphone-duo-has-serious-camera-compromises\/\">worse than Apple&#8217;s Pro-level iPhones<\/a>. Also, it costs $1,999. If you&#8217;re still considering it, I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91603659\/considering-an-iphone-duo-heres-what-having-a-foldable-phone-is-really-like\">a piece for FastCo about what to expect from the Duo<\/a>, based on my years of using other foldables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Other Apple notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The iPhone 18 Pro has the same design as last year&#8217;s models, but a smaller front camera cutout, bigger battery, and variable aperture camera lens, with new manual controls built into the Camera app. It&#8217;s also $100 more than the 17 Pro. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/reviews\/iphone-18-pro-vs-17-pro-differences_id7969\">Here&#8217;s a useful comparison<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As rumored, Apple did not announce a new regular iPhone 18, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/roundup\/iphone-18\/\">probably won&#8217;t until the spring<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The new Apple Watches can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/148354\">persistently capture audio<\/a> to recap earlier conversations, summarize what someone just said to you, and alert you to important sounds. Apple says it&#8217;s not a privacy nightmare because the watches won&#8217;t store any audio recordings or sensitive data, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/148354\">among other reasons<\/a>. It doesn&#8217;t address the uncharted social territory we&#8217;ll be heading into when every offline conversation can become part of a permanent record.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fifth-gen AirPods\u2014not the Pros\u2014have better sound and noise-cancellation. The rumored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/08\/17\/camera-equipped-airpods-macos-26-7\/\">AirPods Pro with cameras<\/a>, which seem like an even bigger potential privacy nightmare, have thankfully not emerged yet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HomePods, Apple TV, and other smart home stuff could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2026\/07\/15\/apple-smart-home-lineup-rumors\/\">still happen later this year<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iOS 27, MacOS 27, and their offshoots are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/os\/ios\/\">available now<\/a>. More on these once I&#8217;ve had more time with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other news and reads unrelated to Apple:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2026\/09\/10\/gemini-windows-app\/\">brings its Gemini desktop app to Windows<\/a>. The Mac version arrived in April.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2026\/09\/10\/gemini-windows-app\/\">discontinues its only Android tablet<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/08\/meta-personal-ai-agents-public-reckoning-privacy-safety.html\">new AI agent it wants you to use<\/a>, even though it <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/10\/01\/meta-plans-to-sell-targeted-ads-based-on-data-in-your-ai-chats\/\">targets ads based on your conversations<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, Meta says it &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/993974\/meta-ai-prompt-invasive-suggestions\">missed the mark<\/a>&#8221; after its Facebook AI suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/artificial-intelligence\/mother-horrified-meta-ai-family\">digging up users&#8217; detailed personal information<\/a>. Now you can use Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details\/Find_My_Device?id=com.google.android.apps.adm&amp;hl=en_NZ&amp;pli=1\">Find Hub app<\/a> to remember where you&#8217;ve stored important documents and belongings, with no pricey item trackers required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just look for the new &#8220;Remembered&#8221; tab, where you&#8217;ll be prompted to add items with Google&#8217;s Gemini assistant. (You can use prompts like &#8220;Remember that my headphones are in the living room side table drawer.&#8221;) After the initial setup, you can also just hit the + button to log item locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple&#8217;s Find My app doesn&#8217;t currently offer anything similar, but it should!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-button-color-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-button-color-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Try these apps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Remember to do stuff (on iPhone):<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/unforgetful-never-lose-a-task\/id6785630295\">Unforgetful<\/a> is an iPhone app whose sole job is to keep pestering you about incomplete tasks that you&#8217;ve set in Apple&#8217;s Reminders app. The idea is that if you create reminders with Siri (&#8220;Hey Siri, book the concert tickets&#8221;), you don&#8217;t have to bother setting a time or date, as the app will periodically remind you on its own. The app requires a $20 per year subscription, but you can try it free for a month. Maybe it&#8217;s worthwhile if you&#8217;re constantly putting things off until you forget about them. (My wife will probably make me subscribe if she reads this.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Free file compressors:<\/strong> For my pal JR Raphael&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/theintelligence.com\/43903\/compress-files\/\">Cool Tools newsletter<\/a>, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/vidshift.io\/compress\/\">Vidshift<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nanofile.io\/\">Nanofile<\/a>, two free websites for making files smaller.
