I&#8217;m Jared Newman, a longtime tech journalist, and you&#8217;re reading the free edition of Advisorator, my weekly tech advice newsletter.<\/em> <em>Did someone share this newsletter with you? <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/signup\/?utm_source=newsletter\">Sign up<\/a> to get it every Tuesday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI companies really want a spot on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can always just use ChatGPT and other AI tools from a web browser, lately they&#8217;ve been pushing standalone apps for Windows PCs and Macs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/gemini.google\/mac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gemini Mac app<\/a> last month, along with a Gemini-infused <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google\/google-app\/desktop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google app for Windows<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OpenAI is pivoting its <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/codex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Codex app<\/a> from a specialized tool for coders into a &#8220;super app&#8221; for all ChatGPT users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anthropic&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/claude.com\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Claude desktop app<\/a> is the home for a new &#8220;Cowork&#8221; tool that can work directly with files on your computer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While these desktop AI apps can be helpful, they&#8217;re also a way for AI companies to ingrain themselves more deeply into your life, in a way that brings some risk. You&#8217;ll likely hear a lot about these apps in the months ahead, so let&#8217;s walk through what they do differently from AI tools on the web, how you can use them, and why you might want to proceed with caution&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The rest of this week&#8217;s feature story is for <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/subscribe-to-advisorator\">Advisorator&#8217;s paying members<\/a>. If you want to back up images from a folder on your computer, you&#8217;ll have to set this up through the Google Photos website (press the + button, then select &#8220;Back up folders&#8221;). When you enable certain AI features, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/answer\/14582048?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing assistance<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/innovation-and-ai\/technology\/safety-security\/how-were-using-ai-to-combat-the-latest-scams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enhanced Safe Browsing mode<\/a> that monitors for phishing scams, the browser quietly installs a 4 GB large language model on your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google will automatically delete this file on its own if your computer seems short on space, so you might as well leave the features on if you have any interest in using them. (Per <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/2026\/05\/05\/extra-antivirus-is-still-overkill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last week&#8217;s column<\/a>, Enhanced Safe Browsing could be especially helpful.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you just want the storage space back now, hit the \u22ee vertical dot icon in Chrome, head to Settings > System, then turn off &#8220;On-Device AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(See also: Turning off Apple Intelligence on your iPhone or Mac to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/how-to\/save-up-to-21gb-storage-disable-apple-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reclaim 7 GB of storage<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Easier window dragging:<\/strong> Microsoft just added a useful new feature to its free <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/detail\/xp89dcgq3k6vld?hl=en-US&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PowerToys app<\/a>, letting you drag a window by clicking any part of it while holding the Alt key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/grabandmove.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12962\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes in handy if the top window bar gets moved off the screen or you just don&#8217;t feel like dragging your cursor as much. (It&#8217;s inspired by a longstanding feature in Linux.) To enable the feature, open the PowerToys app, then head to <strong>Windowing &amp; Layouts > Grab And Move<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mac equivalent:<\/strong> Open a Terminal, type the following, and hit Enter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>defaults write -g NSWindowShouldDragOnGesture -bool true<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, restart your computer. You can click the menu bar icon to quickly check on all your storage drives, and you can set up alerts (via iMessage, email, or notification) for when free space falls below a certain threshold. It&#8217;s completely free with no ads or invasive data collection. I wish a Windows equivalent existed, but so far I&#8217;ve found nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Newmy&#8217;s YouTube Downloader:<\/strong> In case you missed it last week, I&#8217;ve added Mac support to my <a href=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/advisorator-guides\/newmys-youtube-downloader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube downloader tool<\/a>, joining the existing version for Windows.
