The apps you use on your phone, the websites you visit on your computer, and even the things you search for are all fair game for streaming services to track and monetize through advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the good news: As of earlier this month, the companies that share all this data among themselves must allow you to opt out under the California Consumer Privacy Act. If you recently noticed an uptick in emails about changes to various companies\u2019 privacy policies, CCPA was almost certainly the reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you don\u2019t live in California, chances are you can tell these companies to stop selling or transmitting your info. Television advertising has always tried to appeal to whatever demographic is most likely to be watching a particular movie or show; bringing in personal data just makes those ads more relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This type of data collection, however, can be far more invasive than people realize. Streaming services aren\u2019t just gathering basic demographic data or information about your viewing habits. They also pull in information about all the things you do when you\u2019re <em>not<\/em> watching TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The privacy policies for both <a href=\"http:\/\/privacy.cbs\/\">CBS<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/tubitv.com\/static\/privacy\">Tubi<\/a>, for instance, mention that collecting data on your interests, purchase behavior, websites visited, and advertisements viewed or clicked on, all in service of targeting you with ads. Hulu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/privacy\">privacy policy<\/a> says it collects information from data brokers, marketing partners, and public databases. Roku\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.roku.com\/published\/userprivacypolicy\/en\/us\">privacy policy<\/a> says it tracks your behavior across phones, tablets, computers, and streaming players, so it can consistently target you with ads everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/uploads\/cc-images\/optout-100853179-large.jpg\" alt=\"optout\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>You might not recognize these names, but they\u2019re all involved in tracking you for ad-targeting purposes.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unless you take an \u201cignorance is bliss\u201d approach to this information, it\u2019s hard to go about your business online without the feeling that you\u2019re constantly being watched. That doesn\u2019t seem like a fair trade-off for services that are only a bit more reasonably priced than cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do about it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exercising your rights under the CCPA won\u2019t stop you from seeing ads in streaming services, but it does mandate tools to minimize how much data gets passed around, giving you back some peace of mind. Under the law, any large company that \u201csells\u201d users\u2019 data\u2014that is, discloses, transfers, or shares it\u2014must provide ways to opt out. As of July 1, many streaming services have started offering these tool to residents even outside of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are links to the opt-out mechanisms for all the major ad-supported streaming services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hulu:<\/strong> While logged into your account, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.hulu.com\/account\/privacy\">this link<\/a> and select \u201cChange Status\u201d next to \u201cRight to Opt Out,\u201d then select \u201cOpt Out.\u201d Check your email for further instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roku:<\/strong> While signed into your account, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/privacy.roku.com\/ccpa\">this link<\/a> and set the toggle to \u201cEnabled.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HBO Max and WarnerMedia:<\/strong> Fill out the form <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warnermediaprivacy.com\/do-not-sell\/request\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peacock<\/strong>: Fill out an opt-out form <a href=\"https:\/\/privacyportal.onetrust.com\/webform\/17e5cb00-ad90-47f5-a58d-77597d9d2c16\/cda09e33-f935-4960-87de-afa722cef3c2\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tubi:<\/strong> Fill out <a href=\"https:\/\/privacyportal-cdn.onetrust.com\/dsarwebform\/8d9cb670-94ff-4659-969d-6b15fd288fcc\/7b09fc68-23d2-4606-8f84-080d08c9498d.html\">this form<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sling TV:<\/strong> Opt out of everything on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sling.com\/offer-details\/disclaimers\/your-privacy-choices?footer=true\">this page<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Philo:<\/strong> Follow the instructions <a href=\"https:\/\/help.philo.com\/using-philo\/do-not-sell\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MLB TV:<\/strong> Fill out the form at <a href=\"https:\/\/privacyportal-cdn.onetrust.com\/dsarwebform\/53a301ae-6882-46f9-af93-24f64f792aee\/0b9faea2-b2d3-4f5d-84d2-1c523a648a05.html\">this link<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/uploads\/cc-images\/huluoptout-100853180-large.jpg\" alt=\"huluoptout\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Services like Hulu now let you opt out of having your data shared with advertisers.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the above sites, you can visit the opt-out pages for <a href=\"https:\/\/optout.networkadvertising.org\/?c=1\">NAI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/optout.aboutads.info\/?lang=EN\">DAA<\/a>, two advertising consortiums that some streaming services point to instead of offering their own opt-out mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you\u2019re at it, you can also minimize targeted ads on your own streaming devices. These option have been available long before the CCPA went into effect, but are still worth revisiting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Roku:<\/strong> Head to Settings > Privacy > Advertising and check off \u201cLimit ad tracking.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fire TV:<\/strong> Head to Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings and disable \u201cInterest-based ads.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apple TV:<\/strong> Head to Settings > General > Privacy and set \u201cLimit Ad Tracking\u201d to \u201cOn.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Android TV:<\/strong> Head to Settings > Device > Usage &amp; Diagnostics and select \u201cOff.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The NAI also has an illustrated guide to disabling interest-based ads on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkadvertising.org\/internet-connected-tv-choices\/\">smart TVs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkadvertising.org\/mobile-choice\">mobile devices<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/advisorator.com\/members\/uploads\/cc-images\/rokuprivacy-100782208-large.jpg\" alt=\"rokuprivacy\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Roku\u2019s ad-tracking controls aren\u2019t new, but they are useful for limiting data collection.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this extends beyond the purview of streaming and cord-cutting, you might also consider limiting how much of your online behavior gets tracked in the first place. Microsoft\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3513995\/microsoft-new-edge-review-chromium-based-web-browser.html\">new Edge browser<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3396999\/firefox-67-speed-privacy.html\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a>, and Apple\u2019s Safari all have robust protection against the methods websites use to follow you around the web, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/lockdown-apps\/id1469783711\">Lockdown<\/a> app is an excellent way to block tracking system-wide on iOS. You can also use Facebook\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/off_facebook_activity\/\">Off-Facebook Activity<\/a> tool to stop other companies from sending your information back to the social network, and there are numerous ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3299042\/google-privacy-checkup-faq.html\">curb Google\u2019s data collection<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearly, this all starts feeling like a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisyphus\">Sisyphean<\/a> effort at some point, and the CCPA, like everything that came before, is far from a perfect solution. Still, it at least adds to the amount of low-hanging fruit that can minimize trafficking of your personal data.
